About us

The Society of Editors (Victoria) Inc. is an organisation for people who are engaged professionally in editing for publication. It has about 500 members, including in-house and freelance editors.

The Society's aims are to:

  • promote the exchange of ideas and the dissemination of information on matters of professional interest
  • encourage contacts among members
  • assist in establishing and maintaining high standards of editing
  • liaise with other organisations in all matters affecting editors as a group.

The Society is managed by a committee elected by the Society's members at each Annual General Meeting. Position descriptions (PDF* 153 KB) are available for each committee member position.

The Annual General Meeting is usually held in July. At the meeting, committee members report on their portfolios and occasionally a member of the Society is selected to be presented with an Outstanding Service Award.

The Society works closely with the Institute of Professional Editors (IPEd), of which it is a member.

The Society is the oldest of its kind in Australia and has a rich history.

For more details about the Society's operating rules, please view its constitution (PDF* 101 KB).
