Conference dinner, with special guest Jane Clifton

Friday 14 October 2005

Participants dined with the fishes at the Coral Atoll of the Melbourne Aquarium. Highlights of the night were our guest speaker - author, performer and radio personality Jane Clifton - and the introduction of our national body, The Institute of Professional Editors.

Jane Clifton

Jane Clifton is probably best known for her role in the long running TV show Prisoner and the smash-hit stage show Mum's the Word. Her theatre work spans from Melbourne's La Mama and the Pram Factory, through commercial theatre and the Melbourne Theatre Company, and a host of local and international cabaret shows.

Her recently published book A Hand in the Bush, set in the heady days of the seventies, is about skeletons in the closet and simply being in the closet ... a marvellous new comic thriller, brimful with wit and menace. Here's an article about Jane which appeared recently in Melbourne's The Age.

Melbourne Aquarium

The Coral Atoll at Melbourne Aquarium is a 10 m diameter cylindrical tank with live coral, tropical fish, sea stars and sea snakes. Guests also have access to the Sea Jellies display, with many different jelly tanks in this area.

Meal and one complimentary drink were included in the price; additional drinks were available for purchase at the bar.

Cost: $80 per person (includes meal and soft drinks)
Time: 7.00 pm
Location: Melbourne Aquarium, cnr King St & Queens Wharf Rd

35th anniversary book launch of At the Typeface

Thursday 13 October 2005

The Society of Editors (Victoria) celebrated our 35th Anniversary with the launch of At the Typeface. This fascinating anthology comprises a selection of items from the Society's monthly Newsletter, including contributions from some of the leading names of Australia's publishing and literary world.

Founded in 1970, the Victorian Society of Editors has always had a wide range of interests, multi-talented members and distinguished guests; it has long been a meeting point, in its modest way, for Melbourne's intellectual and cultural life.

Authors who have told the Society what they want from an editor include Kerry Cue, Helen Garner, Nikki Gemmell, Gerald Murnane, Geoffrey Serle, Thomas Shapcott and Chris Wallace-Crabbe. Other contributors include the heavyweights of the Australian book industry, and some with reputations that transcend publishing, such as Helen Daniels, Brian Johns, Jill Kitson, Hilary McPhee, Stephen Murray-Smith, Peter Ryan, Susan Ryan, Jocelyn Scutt and Richard Walsh.

Cost: Cost of attending the launch is included in the conference registration
Time: 5.15 pm
Location: Conference venue (Eden on the Park)

Lonely Planet Tour

Wednesday 12 October 2005

Lonely Planet began in the early 1970s after founders Tony and Maureen Wheeler completed an overland journey from London through Asia and on to Australia. That trip resulted in the first-ever Lonely Planet guidebook, Across Asia on the Cheap, and laid the foundations of the world's leading independent travel publisher. Now with over 400 staff in US, UK and Australian offices, Lonely Planet has a pool of 150 authors from over 20 countries and publishes over 650 guidebooks in 14 different languages, covering every corner of the planet. The company also offers a range of services for travellers at home or on the road, including newsletters, the Lonely Planet Phonecard, Lonely Planet Images, and B2B opportunities.

Conference participants were given a comprehensive tour of the editorial and web development areas of Lonely Planet's Melbourne offices and had the opportunity to ask questions about the Lonely Planet production process. The tour included an introduction to the company's website and its innovative use as part of Lonely Planet's publishing services. It also outlined the technological environment Lonely Planet editors work in and its effect on the editors' day-to-day role, and provided an overview of the training Lonely Planet provides for their in-house staff and freelance contributors. Key staff (commissioning editor, managing editor, managing cartographer, style and training coordinator) were on hand to answer questions about many aspects of the company's operations.

Cost: $18 per person
Time: 3.00-6.00 pm
Location: Departed from conference venue

A view of Melbourne with a Spring Racing Carnival slant
A walking tour with Susan Keogh*

Saturday 15 October 2005

In the middle of the racing Spring Carnival - Caulfield Cup day, in fact - and for those interested in Melbourne's racing history, we planned an historical walking tour with Society member and HLM, Susan Keogh.

Susan is a walking encyclopedia of racing anecdotes and facts. The tour departed from Federation Square and the Australian Racing Museum. From there, walkers toured the central city - Collins Street, Gurner's Lane, Myer Hat Department and more - and heard about the associated racing folklore. The walk moved on to the Exhibition Buildings and ended at the Melbourne Museum with Phar Lap.

Cost: $17 (tram fares and museum entry)
Time: Afternoon (TBC)
Location: Departed from conference venue
