SpeakersKeynote speakersOur keynote speakers each addressed one of the sub-themes of the conference. The keynotes are:
Janet MackenzieJanet Mackenzie edited her first book in 1969 and has been at it ever since, working on a wide range of scholarly, educational and general books and business publications. She has a BA (Hons) in English Language and trained at Melbourne University Press. In 1971 she helped to establish the Victorian Society of Editors and is now an honorary life member. She has taught editing at every level from primary school to postgraduate master classes. As a member of the Council of Australian Societies of Editors and convenor of its accreditation working group, she has a national perspective on professional issues. She has recently published The Editor's Companion, an indispensible guide for editing and related professions. Michael WebsterMichael Webster runs the graduate program in publishing studies at RMIT University in Melbourne, established in 1988 on the initiative of the Society of Editors (Victoria), with which it remains closely linked. In addition to his academic role, he established and is Principal of Nielsen BookScan Australia, the book sales tracking and analysis service which now underpins the industry, and runs a private consultancy which undertakes book industry research for government and business both in Australia and overseas. A practising publisher for over 35 years, Michael has served on numerous book industry bodies, including the Literature Board of the Australia Council, the board of CAL, as well various ABA, APA and government committees. Jackie YowellJackie Yowell?s experience in book publishing spans almost thirty years. Beginning with Longman in Kenya, she came to Australia in 1972 and subsequently worked as commissioning editor with publishing houses such as Cheshire, Lansdowne and Five Mile Press, and was also managing editor and then associate publisher with Penguin Books Australia in the 1980s, working with authors ranging from Thea Astley to Gough Whitlam. In the 1990s she started her own small publishing house, Silver Gum Press, which in 1997 was absorbed into Allen & Unwin, with whom she has continued to work. Jackie has also been guest lecturer/speaker in a number of editing and publishing courses and has also been a consultant or committee member on a variety of arts and associated projects for organisations such as Spoleto Writer?s Festival, Victorian Writer?s Centre, Victoria Ministry of the Arts, Community Arts Network, Australian Society magazine and Brotherhood of St Laurence.
