Dinner meetings
The Society holds regular dinner meetings that feature guest speakers from different areas of the publishing industry and beyond.
Meetings take place at a variety of locations around central Melbourne, usually on Wednesdays. Non-members are welcome to attend. There is generally a fee for dinner meetings. Bookings are essential.

The past year has seen a multitude of changes in the Australian bookselling industry, including the massive rise in popularity of e-books, strong competition from overseas online retailers and the much-publicised closings of high-street chains Borders and Angus & Robertson. Do our local bookshops still stand a chance? Join us as Mark Rubbo, Managing Director of independent bookstore chain Readings, speaks about the current state of play for Australia's retail book space, and what challenges it faces in future.
Mark Rubbo is the Managing Director of Readings (founded 1969), which he bought in 1976 with partners Steve Smith and Greg Young. He has been awarded a Medal (OAM) in the General Division for service to the community through fostering an awareness of Australian literature as a bookseller, literary critic, and promoter and supporter of Australian writers, and is also a former judge of the Miles Franklin Literary Award. In 2008 he established the Readings Foundation to support Victorian individuals and organisations that wish to further the development of literacy, community work and the arts.
