Annual General Meeting
The Annual General Meeting was successfully held on 17 July 2008. At the meeting, committee members reported on their portfolios (see the minutes of the meeting [PDF* 75 KB]) and Rosemary Noble was presented with the Society's Outstanding Service Award 2008.
As usual, at this time of the year there is a changeover in committee members, and we farewell and thank the "old" and welcome the new. Your new committee is as follows:
Committee members without portfolio - Julie-Anne Justus and Tony Berry

Chapter and verse: 35 years of bookselling
Graham Davey and Richard Bennett
Wednesday, 27 August 2008
6.30 pm for 7.00 pm
The English Speaking Union,
146 Toorak Road West,
South Yarra
Join Graham Davey and Richard Bennett as they reflect on a combined total of nearly 70 years of bookselling in Melbourne. These long-time friends and colleagues are passionate about books - especially books for kids and young adults - and have seen many changes over their long careers at the retail end of the publishing process. You’ll hear about what sells and what never has, about change and continuity, absurdities and really good ideas, globalisation and specialisation - and there could very well be a bit of a story as well.
17 September - Accreditation exam workshop, Lanai Bar, 113 Queen Street (note new venue)
October - No dinner meeting
12 November - Sarah Brenan in conversation with author/illustrator John Nicholson, Allen & Unwin, Lanai Bar, 113 Queen Street

Please seriously consider sitting the exam in October so we can launch
this much needed and anticipated accreditation scheme for editors. We
want our experienced Victorian editors to lead the way!
This exam is the result of many years of hard work by dedicated and highly skilled editors from all societies, all committed to serving the best interests of the editing profession. We believe that serious professional editors will regard the achievement of Accredited Editor status as an essential step in their careers. The AE will become a valuable asset in marketing your services and gaining greater remuneration.
Additional information - guidelines for candidates and a Q&A - is available on the IPEd website at http://www.iped-editors.org/content/accreditation-program. These documents will give you all the information you need to apply for the exam.
The revised sample exam is also available on the IPEd website. If you are unsure whether you're ready to take the real thing, try 'sitting' the sample exam. If you don't yet have two to three years' full-time experience or equivalent, the exam will still be available when you are ready to take it.
You will find details regarding payment and deadlines on the Sapro website. Note that the exam fee is tax-deductible. You can pay by EFT or AnyPay, money order or cheque; unfortunately, we cannot process credit card payments because IPEd is not in a position to cover the 3% fee.
To obtain further information, contact your acting Accreditation Board delegate (Liz Steele, at iped_accred@socedvic.org).
Don't forget the 4th National Editors Conference, Getting the message across, to be held in Adelaide in October 2009. Visit the conference website for the latest information on the conference.
